Welcome and Announcements

Call to Worship (hba)

L:  This is the day that God has made!  Full of beauty and wonder and delight, if we have eyes to see and hearts open to it all.

ALL:  Holy God, giver of life and love, be among us now as we worship you!  Amen!

Music                        “When Morning Gilds the Skies”              vs 1&4                  #215

1. When morning gilds the skies,
My heart awaking cries:
May Jesus Christ be praised!
Alike at work and prayer,
To Jesus I repair;
May Jesus Christ be praised!

2. Be this, while life is mine,
My song of love divine:
May Jesus Christ be praised!
Sing this eternal song
Through all the ages long:
May Jesus Christ be praised

Unison Prayer (hba)

Gracious and Holy One, You who are both mother and father to us, we thank You and bless You for Your gift of our church family.  We thank You for a home where we can all feel accepted and cherished for who we really are without need for pretense.  We thank You for a love that holds us securely through joy and sorrow, in both easy and in hard times, during the storms and the rainbows that follow them.  Remind us always that we are a family. When we disagree may we do it in love and with respect; when we agree, may we do it humbly and with rejoicing.  Help us draw others into this family with open hearts and open minds.  May we stand by each other in all things, lifting and encouraging, gently holding each other’s hands and hearts always.  In Your name we pray, Amen.

Reading God’s Word                       Psalm 98

Sing to the Lord a new song because he has done wonderful things!

His own strong hand and his own holy arm have won the victory!

The Lord has made his salvation widely known; he has revealed his righteousness in the eyes of all the nations.

God has remembered his loyal love and faithfulness to the house of Israel; every corner of the earth has seen our God’s salvation.

Shout triumphantly to the Lord, all the earth! Be happy! Rejoice out loud! Sing your praises!

Sing your praises to the Lord with the lyre—with the lyre and the sound of music.

With trumpets and a horn blast, shout triumphantly before the Lord, the king!

Let the sea and everything in it roar; the world and all its inhabitants too.

Let all the rivers clap their hands; let the mountains rejoice out loud altogether before the Lord because he is coming to establish justice on the earth!

He will establish justice in the world rightly;he will establish justice among all people fairly.

A Time of Prayer

L: Let’s pause now for a moment of silent contemplation.

ALL: May the words of our mouths and the meditations of our hearts be acceptable in your sight, O Lord, our Rock and our Redeemer!

Centering Time – Silent Prayer

Pastoral Prayer - Lord’s Prayer - Blessing our Gifts

Music                              “Doxology (‘Old 100th’)”                         #815

Praise God, from whom all blessings flow;

Praise Him, all creatures here below;

Praise Him above, ye heav'nly host;

Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.

Gospel Reading John 15:9-17

9“As the Father loved me, I too have loved you. Remain in my love. 10If you keep my commandments, you will remain in my love, just as I kept my Father’s commandments and remain in his love. 11I have said these things to you so that my joy will be in you and your joy will be complete. 12This is my commandment: love each other just as I have loved you. 13No one has greater love than to give up one’s life for one’s friends. 14You are my friends if you do what I command you. 15I don’t call you servants any longer, because servants don’t know what their master is doing. Instead, I call you friends, because everything I heard from my Father I have made known to you. 16You didn’t choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you could go and produce fruit and so that your fruit could last. As a result, whatever you ask the Father in my name, he will give you. 17I give you these commandments so that you can love each other.

Reflecting on the Word

Music                                       “As the Deer”                      vs 1                       #548

As the deer panteth for the water

So my soul longeth after Thee

You are all that my heart desire

And I long to worship You

You alone my strength my shield

To you alone that my spirit yield

You alone that my heart desire

And I long to worship You

Unison Benediction (hba)

ALL: God’s love has led us home.  Now we go into the world to lead others into God’s Kingdom, opening ourselves to our brothers and sisters, serving and giving and blessing as we have been blessed.

L:  Go now in peace, knowing you are cherished.  Amen.

Benediction Response                “Go Now in Peace”

Go now in peace. Never be afraid.

God will go with you each hour of every day.

Go now in faith, steadfast, strong and true.

Know He will guide you in all you do.

Go now in love, and show you believe.

Reach out to others so all the world can see.

God will be there watching from above.

Go now in peace, in faith, and in love.

Easter 5B

Welcome and Announcements

Call to Worship (hba)

L: Called to God’s heart, we come from all places and all circumstances to worship, to pray, to nourish ourselves at His table.  Called by the Spirit, we join together in Christ’s name

ALL:  Come, God of All!  Bless us with Your divine Presence as we join together to give You thanks and praise.

Music                                       “I Love to Tell the Story”                       vs 1                          #444

I love to tell the story of unseen things above: of Jesus and his glory, of Jesus and his love.

I love to tell the story, because I know ’tis true. It satisfies my longings as nothing else could do.

I love to tell the story, ’twill be my theme in glory,

To tell the old, old story of Jesus and his love.

Unison Prayer (hba)

As we worship together today fill our hearts and spirits, inspiring us to new things! Release us from the spirit of fear and trembling that keeps us bound to the judgments of those around us. God, we need to take joy in being the people that You created us to be.  We need to embrace our authentic selves, knowing You made us that way.  Help us sink our roots firmly in You, drawing nourishment and strength from Your Word.  As we grow into our true selves, help us refine our souls.  Show us how to release the bad that holds us back from truly loving You and all Your children, and lead us to a spirit of grace and mercy.  Help us bear fruit worthy of You!  In Your name we pray this for ourselves and for each other.  Amen!

Reading God’s Word   1 John 4:7-8, 11-16

7Dear friends, let’s love each other, because love is from God, and everyone who loves is born from God and knows God. 8The person who doesn’t love does not know God, because God is love.11Dear friends, if God loved us this way, we also ought to love each other. 12No one has ever seen God. If we love each other, God remains in us and his love is made perfect in us. 13This is how we know we remain in him and he remains in us, because he has given us a measure of his Spirit. 14We have seen and testify that the Father has sent the Son to be the savior of the world. 15If any of us confess that Jesus is God’s Son, God remains in us and we remain in God. 16We have known and have believed the love that God has for us. God is love, and those who remain in love remain in God and God remains in them.

Gospel Reading John 15:1-8

1“I am the true vine, and my Father is the vineyard keeper. 2He removes any of my branches that don’t produce fruit, and he trims any branch that produces fruit so that it will produce even more fruit. 3You are already trimmed because of the word I have spoken to you. 4Remain in me, and I will remain in you. A branch can’t produce fruit by itself, but must remain in the vine. Likewise, you can’t produce fruit unless you remain in me. 5I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, then you will produce much fruit. Without me, you can’t do anything. 6If you don’t remain in me, you will be like a branch that is thrown out and dries up. Those branches are gathered up, thrown into a fire, and burned. 7If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask for whatever you want and it will be done for you. 8My Father is glorified when you produce much fruit and in this way prove that you are my disciples.

Gathering at the Table

Music                                           “Blessed Be the Tie That Binds”                vs 1            #426

Blest be the tie that binds our hearts in Christian love;

The fellowship of kindred minds is like to that above.

Unison Benediction (hba)

ALL: God, You fill us with Your life and breath, wrapping us in a warm cloak of Your grace.  You have found each of us worthy of Your astounding love.  May we, in turn, see in all of Your children our brothers and sisters; may we fill them, clothe them, hold them, and love them in Your holy name.

L: Go now in peace.  Amen.
